myDNA reports on seven ways to transform yourself, and help yourself look and feel as good as you did in years gone by. Of course bad breath, and specifically preventing bad breath makes a major impact on changing things.

Specifically, bad breath caused by smoking is easily remedied by simply not smoking anymore, but often easier said than done.

“We all know smoking increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer – but it can also make you look and feel older,” said Lyle L. Berkowitz, M.D., co-chair of the Asthma and Allergy Channel for Revolution Health Group’s Medical Advisory Board (MAB).

“Not surprisingly, young patients often respond better to these cosmetic and fitness issues than to the other life and death issues,” he added. “So, some of the things I’ll talk about with smokers include the yellowing of teeth, the bad breath and the overall decreased ability to exercise as well as you could if you weren’t smoking. Skin elasticity is also affected, making wrinkles more likely.”

Tips and advice to get rid of bad breath, as reported in The Toronto Star…

Brush your teeth for two minutes; most people brush for 13 seconds — not good enough.

Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, “to replenish oxygen-rich saliva,” Katz says. Oxygen kills bacteria.

Breathe through your nose; avoid dry mouth, avoid alcohol — it dries out the mouth.

Be aware that many drugs — from antidepressants to antihistamines, including Prozac, Wellbutrin, Claritin, Motrin, Advil — produce bad breath as a side effect.

Floss twice a day and make sure you get into all the little crevices that can be breeding grounds for bacteria.

Avoid dairy products, especially cheeses — “they are easily converted into sulphur compounds by bacteria,” Katz says.

Limit intake of coffee and other acidic drinks such as tomato juice and all citrus juices. “Acid makes bacteria reproduce faster,” Katz says. Tea is a better choice.

If you have braces on your teeth, clean them thoroughly with a Waterpik.

Clean your tongue. Buy a tongue cleaner and use it — gently!

If you can’t ask someone to check the smell of your breath, test it yourself by licking the back of your hand. Take a whiff.

If you know people who have bad breath, but can’t tell them, go to Dr. Katz’s website, therabreathcanada.com. Click on “Someone with bad breath” and follow the instructions. An anonymous message will be sent from the folks at TheraBreath, politely informing the recipients that they may wish to take action.

The Toronto Fashion Monitor reports…

Onion breath lingering long after dinner? Bad breath — the medical term is halitosis — is caused by more than pungent food.

Causes of bad breath include:

Dental problems: Poor dental hygiene leads to an accumulation of bacterial plaque on teeth or inflammation of gums. This bacteria contributes to bad breath.

Dry mouth: Insufficient saliva allows dead cells to accumulate in your mouth. The cells decompose and cause bad breath.

Food: The oils from garlic and onions are absorbed into your bloodstream and transferred to your lungs, where they’re expelled when you breathe out.

So how do you get rid of bad breath?

Practice good dental care to fight bad breath. Brush your teeth and your tongue – where bad breath-causing bacteria reside.

Floss daily. See your dentist regularly to get professional teeth cleaning. Scraping your tongue also helps to get rid of bad breath.

Drink water for moist mouth. Chew gum or suck on candy. Sugarless is best for your teeth and breath.

Drink tea. A substance in tea may prevent the growth of bacteria that causes bad breath.

If you have dentures, clean them at least once a day or as directed by your dentist.

If nothing works, talk to your dentist or doctor. Halitosis, or bad breath, can be caused by other conditions including postnasal drip, infections, hepatitis, gastric ulcer or uncontrolled diabetes.
