Patients in a study in Sao Paulo, Brazil, examining patients with GERD and dyspepsia showed that proton inhibitors were a factor in at least 75% of all the cases of halitosis.
About 39% of all the GERD patients suffered from halitosis, while only 18% of the dyspepsia patients suffered from bad breath.
The prescription medicine class used for the treating of GERD was the major factor in increased incidence of halitosis.
